Born in Shiga Prefecture, in 1972, Kawauchi-san has become one of the most celebrated contemporary photographers in Japan and became interested in photography while she was studying at Seian Junior College of Art and Design.
Her publications and exhibitions have been seen worldwide.
Her photographs mark the cycle of existence illustrating themes of birth, life, death, and the nuances of temporality.
Her photographs mark the cycle of existence illustrating themes of birth, life, death, and the nuances of temporality.
Which are demonstrated in her best known work Alia which means family in turkish.
They are at once effortless, fleeting and occasionally melancholic.
While the single image contains an encapsulated experience, it is the strength of multiple images in sets and suites that demonstrate the power of this work as a whole.
