Elena Kalis was born in Moscow, Russia but has lived in the Bahama’s for ten years with her husband and two children. She has a degree in the fine arts, but her main passion is photography. She mainly does underwater photography, using her friends and children as her subjects. Her work has been included in books, magazines and even cd covers. Her work is very unique. She has a knack for capturing the innocence of children in her photography. Her color schemes vary from eerie to very playful. The stillness of the movement in the water is hypnotic and utterly graceful. In some of the shots, the lighting is rather strong and makes the colors pop. I think that underwater photography is a terrific idea, and the way she does them is gorgeous. They have beautiful color in them, and the atmosphere she creates through it is very interesting. Her images are very pure and I love how she gets the subject to look as if it’s a regular portrait, based on their facial expressions in some of them, but they are clearly not in a typical setting.
